That word is a mouthful.  Here’s a fun game:

Open Google. Search for “Unconstitutional State Law”.  See the horror.

Once upon a time, our country was divided.  Back before cars, trains or planes.  When people were born and died in one county.  Where family businesses were owned and operated for generations on the same tract of land.  Now some people think these were “the good old days”  I see them as the dark ages.  You know what happens when people don’t have TV or the Internet to expose them daily to other cultures?  They become narrow minded.

So sure, maybe the corn farmer in Nebraska doesn’t NEED to know who the president of Libya is.  Hell I don’t even know if Libya has a president.  And that doesn’t make anyone a bad person or a moron.  People have limited time and resources.  You can’t possibly KNOW everything there is to know about everything.  But you can, however, be self aware.  Self aware of your lack of knowledge.  You can be aware that there are other cultures, religions and races outside your small community.  And you can realize that we all SHARE this planet and this country and, yes, even the state.

So that’s why we have a US Constitution.  It’s not perfect.  But the idea that there are inalienable human rights not to be violated should reign supreme.  It’s a philosophical debate as old as time.

So does it upset me in this day to see states living by archaic ideas?  To see local governments that require elected officials to be theist: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2009/12/15/which-states-ban-atheists-from-holding-public-office/

To see local governments pushing religious ideas into public schools: http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/aclu-ind-creationism-bill-is-unconstitutional

To see that many states still tell privately owned business when they can be open on Sunday and what they are allowed to sell. everystateever. :3

I know democracy isn’t perfect.  And this is just an example of “tyranny of the majority”.  But there are certain rights guaranteed ALL citizens, no matter where they live.  Free speech.  Freedom of (and FROM) religion.  Free Enterprise.  etc.  And the Federal Constitution should and always has trumped State constitutions.

So Ron Paul supporters, I ask you this: Why do you still insist on saying silly things like “If you don’t like the Sate’s laws, just move” when I can so readily reply “If you don’t like the Federal constitution, then why are you part of the United States?”

States who wish to maintain the freedoms and protections and tax funded benefits of the US Government have to abide by the Constitution.  It’s a simple idea really. So STOP fighting it.

Religious Intolerance Hate Crime in the News

This week has been a busy one for violence and hatred fueled by theists killing theists and theists attacking people they disagree with.  I think it’s time all these sane, level headed, moderate believers I keep hearing about start speaking out against these men and women who make your faith look like trash.

Lynched for Being Gay

A young man and his partner were beaten by members of a local church for being homosexual.  And that Deacon and Pastor also happened to be his father and uncle.  Lovely.  The best part was reading how the congregation and local sheriff stood by and watched it happen. This is called public lynching.  http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/10/04/pastor-orders-his-flock-to-beat-gay-couple-arriving-at-church/

Mistaken Muslim Shooting?

Sikhs wear turbans.  Ignorant extremist Christians think anything in a turban is a terrorist.  Gunman goes crazy and shoots up a temple of Indian worshipers.  Rings familiar for those Sikh murders after 9/11.  Same tragic story, yet again. http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/06/us/wisconsin-temple-shooting/index.html

White Southern Baptist Church Bans Black Wedding

So, shocker, racism is alive and well in the South thanks to the churches who continue to lie to the locals once a week.  The sunshine in this story is that some Baptists are actually speaking out against the church.  Some. http://www.ktul.com/story/19149217/baptist-leaders-call-on-church-to-reject-racism

Amish Beard Haters Gone Mad?

Interfaith violence between rival Amish groups.  Beard chopping to “send a message”? http://www.edmontonjournal.com/life/Amish+charged+with+beardcutting+attacks+reject+plea+deals+trial/7012616/story.html

Hate-Speech and Hate-Crimes are ok as long as Jesus or Mohammad made you Do It

The Federal Govt has upheld that religious bigotry and violence (even the kind that fuels murder and aggression against innocent people) is totally legal as long as you have the excuse of religious indoctrination to back your actions.  http://sdgln.com/news/2012/08/03/federal-appeals-court-hate-crimes-act-stands

and that’s just the US.

The rest of the world seems to be falling apart for the very same, THEIST driven hatredhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/syria-rebel-video-claims-to-show-abducted-iranians/2012/08/05/42f69d04-df0d-11e1-8d48-2b1243f34c85_story.html

Dear society: GROW THE FUCK UP.  Your personal religious OPINION (yes, that’s ALL it is) does not give you the right, freedom, or free reign to treat other human beings like target practice, trash or animals.  YOU are the criminals. YOU are in the wrong.  And it is YOU who are making all religions look like extremist cults.  So have at it moderates.  We atheists shouldn’t have to fight all your battles for you.  Speak up and clean up your houses from the inside.

Why Chic-fil-A Supporters are Hypocrites

Should the CEO of a national chain of crappy chicken joints be free to say whatever they want and blow their income on hate groups?  Sure, go ahead, be proud of your ignorance.

But by all means, religious intolerance needs to take a step back and look in the mirror.  Fact is, “majority moral opinion” has already set the precedent to limit free enterprise all across this country.  Don’t believe me?

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alcohol_laws_of_the_United_States_by_state

Sunday liquor limitations are just the tip of the problem.  15 states ban the sale of liquor on Christmas and 8 of them include bans on Easter.

Now ask yourself why.

Obviously there is no issue with selling alcohol itself.  So why only on Sunday?  Why only on Christian holidays?  Because the MORAL OPINION of the majority took a vote or in some cases just passed a law to ban sales and limit how private businesses could be run in their city.

Now let’s take a closer look at the laws in a few select cities:

Salt Lake City, Utah: http://fox13now.com/2012/01/24/federal-lawsuit-filed-against-the-state-over-liquor-laws/

Clearwater, Florida: http://www.sptimes.com/2004/07/18/Tampabay/Scientology_s_town.shtml/

Food bans in Brooklyn because of Palestine/Israel issues: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/park-slope-food-co-op-schedules-vote-hold-a-referendum-banning-israeli-products-article-1.1026542#ixzz1n4pt6xHx

Pennsylvania Strip Club laws: http://www.ehow.com/info_8081403_pennsylvania-strip-clubs-near-schools.html

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I am a fan of actual FREE enterprise.  But when the opposition is playing so aggressively to BAN every single thing THEY find offensive, I find it hypocritical to start pointing fingers at everyone else when one of YOUR businesses comes against a wall of opposing moral opinion.

Either make the laws Federally applicable to ALL businesses or allow Chicago and Boston and San Francisco ban homophobic chains who make financial contributions to anti-homosexual attack groups  from their cities.  You cannot have it both ways religious fanatics.  You just can’t.
